Lai Garling, born in Australia and raised in Hong Kong. She began her textile art journey in London, Chelsea College of Art. She specializes in weaving, an old traditional form of textile production that interlaces two distinct sets of yarn to form a fabric.
In mid 2016, Garling became a Hong Kong Youth Square art ambassador to travel to Dunhuang. Meeting local artists and conservators who specialize in grottoes art. Since that encounter she started to share her art and cultural journey through her social media.
Since 2017, Garling has continued sharing her adventures, with a strong focus on South-East Asian heritage art and craft. She has been carrying cyanotype tools to Southeast Asia and Taiwan, holding workshops while learning from the locals. She has participated in international art festivals in Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Hong Kong.
Ever since, she has dedicated herself to preserving not just South East Asian, but also Chinese history and culture through her work. She aspires to inspire others to discover and cherish the beauty of traditional arts, ensuring their continued relevance in our modern world. With a passion for art education, Garling has hosted over 100 art workshops, guiding more than 2,000 participants in the transformative process of self-discovery. Her artistic practice emphasises that the journey of creation is just as significant as the final product.
