Two generations of local artists collaborate to create and preserve traditional craftsmanship

兩代本地藝術家首合作製「藍曬五幅裁」 望承傳傳統工藝

Garling embarked on her journey to learn cheongsam craftsmanship under the mentorship of Qingqing. Starting from scratch, she dedicated two months to creating her first set of “五幅裁 Wufucai” . Continuing her efforts at home, she crafted a semi-transparent version and completed the blueprinting process.

嘉玲開展學習旗袍手藝之路,在靳青青老師的指導下,她由零開始,用2個月時間,製作第一幅五幅裁。其後,再回家開始製作一幅半透明的五幅裁,再進行藍曬工序。

Behind those cyanotypes, she discovered friendship and stories of human connections. These stories include generations of Chinese people in Malaysia, as well as her own stories of making friends in Malaysia. Karen and her best friend in Malaysia have known each other for three years.

在藍曬那些藍的背後,她發現自己找到友誼,也找到人與人之間的故事,包括幾代華人在馬來西亞的故事,以及她自己結識大馬朋友的故事。Karen跟她在馬來西亞最好的朋友已認識3年,那時Karen正到當地邊旅行邊教藍曬,在工作坊中認識Maybe Wong。


讓傳統蠟染變得更簡單 Traditional Batik, Modern Ease: A Simplified Approach

Besides teaching both traditional and frozen batik, Lai Garling recommends her students travel to discover beautiful batik. She humorously notes that, though she’s an art teacher, her job also involves promoting travel.

“I love traveling and exploring historical cultures. Therefore, I aim for my students to not only learn batik but also gain a deeper understanding of their own culture.”

除了教授傳統蠟染與凍蠟染以外,黎嘉玲還會向學生推薦到各地旅遊,尋找漂亮的蠟染。對此黎嘉玲自嘲,自己雖是個美術老師,但她的工作還包括了推廣旅行。 我個人很喜歡旅行,喜歡探知歷史文化,因此,學生不僅僅是學峇迪而已,我希望他們還能對自己的文化有更深刻的了解。

History helps us understand our identity, the past causes the present yet we can rewrite and innovate our future through studying cultural history. Beside being inspired by it, I also want to inform and educate youngsters as well.

「歷史幫助我們了解自己的身份,過去導致了現在,然而我們可以通過研究文化歷史來改寫和創新未來。除了從中獲得靈感,我還想向年輕人傳遞知識和教育他們。

I want to learn soon-to-be-lost crafts and explore ways to innovate and transform them. She started by promoting her workshops in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and expanded them to Malacca, Terengganu, Penang, and Surabaya, Indonesia.
